Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment --> Personal Information Device:
intersection status

Definitions

intersection status (Information Flow): Current signal phase and timing information for all lanes at a signalized intersection. This flow identifies active lanes and lanes that are being stopped and specifies the length of time that the current state will persist for each lane. It also identifies signal priority and preemption status and pedestrian crossing status information where applicable.

Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment (Source Physical Object): 'Connected Vehicle Roadside Equipment' (CV RSE) represents the Connected Vehicle roadside devices that are used to send messages to, and receive messages from, nearby vehicles using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) or other alternative wireless communications technologies. Communications with adjacent field equipment and back office centers that monitor and control the RSE are also supported. This device operates from a fixed position and may be permanently deployed or a portable device that is located temporarily in the vicinity of a traffic incident, road construction, or a special event. It includes a processor, data storage, and communications capabilities that support secure communications with passing vehicles, other field equipment, and centers.

Personal Information Device (Destination Physical Object): The 'Personal Information Device' provides the capability for travelers to receive formatted traveler information wherever they are. Capabilities include traveler information, trip planning, and route guidance. Frequently a smart phone, the Personal Information Device provides travelers with the capability to receive route planning and other personally focused transportation services from the infrastructure in the field, at home, at work, or while en-route. Personal Information Devices may operate independently or may be linked with vehicle on-board equipment. This subsystem also supports safety related services with the capability to broadcast safety messages and initiate a distress signal or request for help.

Communication Solutions

Solutions are sorted in ascending Gap Severity order. The Gap Severity is the parenthetical number at the end of the solution.

Selected Solution

EU: Signal Control Messages - BTP/GeoNetworking/G5

Solution Description

This solution is used within Australia and the E.U.. It combines standards associated with EU: Signal Control Messages with those for V-X: BTP/GeoNetworking/G5. The EU: Signal Control Messages standards include upper-layer standards required to implement signal control information flows. The V-X: BTP/GeoNetworking/G5 standards include lower-layer standards that support broadcast, near constant, low latency vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications using the ETSI GeoNetworking Bundle over the 5.9GHz spectrum.

Basis This data is intended for all vehicles in the immediate area of the sender. info needs to be accurate and should not be tampered so the vehicle OBE has correct SPaT info for all lanes; however the driver can still see the traffic signals. From NYC: This information will be used by the vehicle ASD to determine whether or not to issue a red light violation warning to the driver. False information could lead to the vehicle ASD not issuing a warning when in fact it should have. The vehicle operator is not using this information to decide whether or not to travel through the intersection. They will still have visual cues, such as traffic lights, indicating whether or not they can travel through the intersection. needs to be available so the vehicle OBE has correct SPaT info; identifies signal priority and preemption status and pedestrian crossing status information, etc. However availability cannot be guaranteed over a wireless medium. From NYC: Without this information, vehicle ASD may not properly issue a red light violation warning to the driver. The vehicle operator will still use the traffic
